My Personal Tutor - LEARNING STYLE PROFILE
The way each person prefers to learn is called his/her learning style. It is simply the method by which he/she learns best. Research has shown that students do learn differently. Most learners have one dominant or preferred style of learning.
The idea of individualized learning styles originated in the 1970s and has gained popularity in recent years. Extensive research has been conducted, especially in the USA, on various learning styles. A number of learning style models has been identified. Some of these models include the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Model, Kolb’s Learning Style, Jackson’s Learning Style Profiler, Dunn and Dunn Model, NC State University Index of Learning Style, the VAK Model and many others.
The profiling of a student’s learning style will help to identify her dominant or preferred learning style. Such identification and the boosting of the less dominant learning styles can have numerous benefits for a learner when it comes to studying. The benefits are increased if teachers or facilitators adapt their teaching methods to best fit each student's learning style.
A learner who knows and understands his learning style can tap its hidden powers to give himself a significant advantage in his studies. A student’s insight into her learning style and the adoption of recommendations made by us in her learning style profile can make her a more effective learner and can thus have a positive impact on her academic results. In fact, a learner’s insight into his learning style can even play a role in his choice of career and in his accomplishments at work.
The Study Centre has opted to use the VAK model which is widely used in the schools in the USA. Our Learning Style Profile (LSP) will:
· help a student identify his natural learning style, i.e. how he prefers to learn
· provide a summary of a learner’s preferred or dominant learning style
· suggest ways in which a learner can reinforce her preferred learning style and boost the less dominant learning styles
· provide suggested strategies to complement a learner’s revealed learning style
· recommend the actions that a learner needs to take to sharpen his learning skills overall
· enlighten a student’s teacher/facilitator regarding his preferred learning style and assist the teacher/facilitator to accommodate the student’s learning style in the former’s teaching methodology
The Senior LSP (for grade 8 to post-matric learners) consists of 32 questions while the Junior LSP (for grades 4 to 7) consists of 22 questions. Either questionnaire should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Each completed questionnaire will be immediately scored by the programme and the results will identify the candidate’s preferred or dominant learning style and will provide recommendations.
